Transplant Type - Double-lung
We're thrilled to report that Eric received his transplant on Christmas Eve 2014!
At age 9, this Sarasota, FL native was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF), which also afflicts his mother. Doctors said a double-lung transplant was critical to Eric's survival.
Battling such a debilitating illness has been a difficult adjustment for Eric, as he has always led a very active life. He enjoyed school and spending time with friends during his time at Cardinal Mooney High School and the University of Florida, where he graduated with a degree in history. He truly misses the ability to work and be independent, as his job was his life’s passion. He worked extremely hard to overcome obstacles and move up within a local grocery store chain, but now his declining health prevents him from working at all.
Eric looks forward to feeling normal again and living his life without depending on an oxygen tank for every breath. He dreams of once again doing things that we so often take for granted, such as walking through the mall without needing to sit down for a break or carrying his own groceries inside from the car. But right now, he simply needs your help.
The average double-lung transplant costs nearly $800,000. And that’s just the beginning. Even with health insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, he faces significant expenses related to the surgery. He will also need a lifetime of follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. These medications are very costly, and they’re as important to his survival as the transplant itself.
Eric lives more than 150 miles from his transplant center, and he was required to temporarily relocate to be closer to the hospital both before and after his transplant, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging.
