Transplant Type - Liver
We're thrilled to report that Jim received his transplant on June 5, 2016!
Several years ago, Jim was diagnosed with hemochromatosis, a genetic disease in which excess iron is retained by the body. Untreated, this can lead to a variety of organ problems, including cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver. For Jim, this disease was managed for several years. However, in of January 2015, he became jaundiced. Subsequent testing revealed that Jim also had primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a disease of the bile ducts, and autoimmune hepatitis, which is liver inflammation that occurs when your own body's immune system turns against liver cells. PSC progresses slowly and can lead to liver failure, and a liver transplant is the only known cure. Throughout Jim's medical evaluations and visits, doctors have said the odds of having this combination of diseases are like "winning the lottery."
Before his health began to decline, Jim led an active life and enjoyed his career, traveling, coaching baseball, working out, and spending time with his wife and six kids on Cape Cod walking the beaches and just being outdoors. Due to his illness, Jim's activities have been extremely limited. He doesn't feel well enough to participate in most of these activities. In order for him to get his life back, a liver transplant was necessary.
The average liver transplant costs approximately $575,000 for surgery alone. That’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, which covers the cost of the transplant, he will face significant out of pocket expenses related to surgery and recovery. He will also be on a regimen of immunosuppressive drugs for the rest of his life. These medications are as critical to his survival as the transplant itself, and the monthly out-of-pocket cost to Jim and his family is in the thousands of dollars. All transplant recipients are faced with similar lifetime financial burdens.
