Transplant Type: Kidney-Pancreas
Janae Wadley is fighting for her life. A type-one diabetic since she was 17 months old, her family is all too familiar with this disease due to a family history. Around 13 years ago, Janae lost her vision and is considered legally blind, amongst other complications from her diabetes. Unfortunately, she is in stage five renal failure and began daily at-home dialysis treatments in March 2017, which take a toll on her quality of life. Now doctors say a kidney-pancreas transplant is critical to her survival.
During this time, Janae is grateful for the love and support of her family. Her parents have stepped in to help her through this process, giving their time and energy to Janae’s treatment. She also has a 13-year-old daughter, who she looks forward to spending more time with after her transplant. Sadly, Janae currently does not get to see her daughter as much as she would like because she has to focus on getting healthier. After her transplant, she cannot wait to finally feel well, as well as to get more involved with her community, attend family gatherings, and travel with her daughter.
The average kidney/pancreas transplant costs over $650,000. And that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
When she receives her transplant, Janae must temporarily relocate 280 miles from home to be near the hospital during recovery for at least three months, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food and lodging for both herself and her required caregiver.
