Mary Ann Hoomis
Transplant Type: Double Lung
Mary Ann Hoomis is fighting for her life. Thirteen years ago, Mary Ann was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, interstitial lung disease, and a host of other health problems. Since then, her lung function has declined, and she now requires an oxygen tank to help her breathe. Doctors say a double-lung transplant is critical to her survival.
During such a difficult time, Mary Ann is thankful for the love and support of her husband of 44 years, George, and their family and friends. Mary Ann and George have two daughters and two grandchildren, and they all worry about her health. She looks forward to receiving a transplant so she can breathe freely without carrying an oxygen tank and be able to participate in life again. She wants nothing more than to be able to return to the activities she once enjoyed, like taking walks with her family, gardening, going to the beach, taking art classes, and volunteering. But right now, she needs your help.
The average double-lung transplant costs more than $1 million. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Mary Ann faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. Mary Ann had to stop working due to her declining health, further adding to her financial burdens.
