Transplant Type: Kidney
Gwendolyn Best is awaiting a new lease on life. In 2011, she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Over the years, her kidney function has declined and her illness has now progressed to stage-5. Gwendolyn is on dialysis, which leaves her tired and takes a toll on her quality of life. Doctors say a kidney transplant is critical.
Gwendolyn is thankful for the love and support of her family and friends during this difficult time. She is a single mother of a 15-year-old son, and her illness has prevented her from being the active mother she longs to be. Gwendolyn looks forward to receiving a transplant that will free her from dialysis and allow her to be more active again. She enjoys concerts, clubs, and being able to do things with her son, but her health limits her activities now. She wants nothing more than to live a normal life and be healthy so she can be there to watch her son grow up. But right now, she needs your help.
The average kidney transplant costs more than $414,000, and that’s only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover a portion of the transplant costs, Gwendolyn still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. Gwendolyn is unable to work due to her health and dialysis schedule, further adding to her financial burdens.
