Teresa Michelle Moore
Transplant Type: Lung
Teresa Moore is learning to live with a new lung. In January 2018, Teresa became ill and developed a persistent cough. After months of tests she had a lung biopsy and in July, was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Teresa relied on the use of an oxygen tank in order to breathe. Doctors said a lung transplant was critical to her survival.
During such a difficult time, Teresa is thankful for the love and support of her husband of 40 years, Michael, and their family and friends. Teresa has three children and twelve grandchildren (with another on the way), and her health is a constant worry for her family. Teresa had always planned to retire from teaching so she could visit her grandchildren and pursue writing children’s stories, but now she will have to concentrate on respiratory rehabilitation and recovery instead.
Although the transplant has been completed, and Teresa can breathe freely again without the supplemental oxygen tank ever by her side, she must now recover from the surgery and rely on medications to keep her body from rejecting her new lung. She still looks forward to being the active wife, mother, and grandmother she longs to be. She wants nothing more than to feel better so she can travel to visit her grandchildren and enjoy spending time with family and friends. But right now, she needs your help.
The average double-lung transplant costs more than $1 million. And that’s only the beginning. Even with health insurance, Teresa faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they’re as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.
Teresa’s transplant center is 150 miles away from her home, and she travels back and forth frequently for appointments. Now that the transplant has been performed, she has temporarily relocated to be near the transplant center while she recovers, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging.
